Con cada vez mayor ansiedad y curiosidad espero la oportunidad de ver la polémica película, o documental, del artista holandés Renzo Martens Enjoy Poverty.
El trabajo, intitulado episodio III, pese ser el segundo en un trilogía, ha estado provocando las mas interesantes reacciones en las audiencias, especialmente en el publico académico y en el mundo de la cooperación al desarrollo. Reacciones que se mueven entre sorpresa, admiración e incluso rabia. Perturbador parece ser el adjetivo mas común, y merecido, para clasificar la propuesta.
El texto abajo fue el comentario del renombrado London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) para anunciar la actividad, ocurrida ayer, en la universidad con la presencia del propio Renzo Martens. Looking forward to see it!
"Episode III – ‘Enjoy Poverty’ investigates the emotional and economic value of Africa’s most lucrative export: filmed poverty. As with more traditional African exports such as cocoa and gold, the suppliers of this new African commodity hardly benefit from it at all. Deep in the interiors of the Congo, Dutch artist Renzo Martens launches an emancipatory programme that helps the poor become aware of their primary capital resource: poverty. Over several years, Martens single handedly undertakes an epic journey. Combining investigative journalism, satire and self awareness in a deeply singular view, Episode III – ‘Enjoy Poverty’ is ingeniously provocative and ironic, despite the sad reflection staring back in the mirror that he holds up."

what is interesting is that the artist community is also divided as to the responses towards it, considering this was a film made by an artist for the gallery space. critics argue that martens' film is largely a response to the increasing demand for authentic politically engaged art by the arts market and critique both his approach and messages. others have likened him to the fantastic Warner Herzog and his filming technics to remind of Aguirre and Fitzceraldo (both of which are set in rivers and mountains of the South American continent)... uncanny is also the artist's resemblance to the younger Klaus Kinski that stars in so much of Herzog's work
